hibiscus
How it works
Hibiscus is a vibrant red plant that provides weight loss and anti-inflammatory benefits to Calibrate Reds. This beautiful flower contains high levels of antioxidants such as flavonoids, polyphenols, anthocyanins and chlorogenic acid. Polyphenols are organic plant compounds that are helpful in managing weight by supporting the healthy metabolism of foods.[1] With its anti-inflammatory action, hibiscus is a powerful ingredient for fighting free radicals that cause oxidative stress in fat tissue. This physical state can damage cells, increase fat cells, and make it more challenging to lose weight.[2]
The evidence
A randomised controlled trial found that Hibiscus sabdariffa extract (HSE) helped to reduce body weight, body fat percentage, and overall BMI in the treatment group over 12 weeks. The study also found that HSE was well tolerated, with no participants reporting unwanted side effects.[3] A 2019 literature review found that many studies regarding HSE and its ability to help with weight loss yielded positive results. The studies reported that HSE prevents fat accumulation by reducing pre-adipocyte growth (precursors for fat cell production) into mature fat cells.[4]
